Boris Spassky is a Russian chess player who was the 10th world chess champion. Spassky competed in three world championship matches, losing to Tigran Petrosian in 1966, defeating Petrosian to win the title in 1969, and then losing to Bobby Fischer in a famous match in 1972. After tying for first place during the event, Spassky won the Soviet Chess Championship twice outright and lost in the playoffs both times. In 2012, he left France and returned to Russia. In the twentieth century, he was Russia's most prolific chess player. Spassky is the oldest living retired world champion as of 2021.
